An Ask – Don’t Tell Safety Meeting

In last month’s Flash, we took a moment to revisit the Ask, Don’t Tell Safety Meeting format. Included was one example of how to implement the method. If you missed that edition you can find a copy here.

This month we are providing one more example to reinforce the use of the method. These examples are meant not only to demonstrate the implementation of the method, you are free to use them as is – should they be relevant to your Followers.

Topic: https://www.kcbd.com/2024/12/26/woman-critically-injured-freak-accident-that-left-her-pinned-between-cars/

Purpose: For my followers to be more aware in situations where hazards that are not typical exist.

Headline: Serious Injury From What Was Described As A “Freak Accident”

Summary: Long story short: while helping someone getting into a vehicle outfitted with accelerator and break pedals on the passenger side, the person being seated hit the accelerator pedal while the vehicle was in drive. The unexpected movement of the vehicle pinned the helper on the outside against another vehicle.

Connection: Unless your job is delivering the mail, odds are there won’t be pedals on the passenger side of a vehicle. Still, we regularly find ourselves in parking lots with vehicles operated by others. Moreover, no matter where we are and what we are doing, we are exposed to hazards that are obvious – and unexpected.

Darn Good Questions

1. What’s your view about “freak accidents”?

2. In this particular situation, what signs were there to indicate this particular hazard might not have been all that unexpected?

3. In this case, we have the benefit of hindsight; those involved did not. Still, what lessons do you think can be found in this situation that you can apply to help you recognize what might be “an unexpected situation”?
