Safety meetings are a reliable and predictable moment to influence your followers. You’ve got the luxury of time to prepare, and you know exactly when and where that moment will happen.

Having a good – or even great – safety meeting shouldn’t be all that hard. Helping you make them easy is our goal in writing the Flash.

Hopefully, yours aren’t just moments of silence. But if there isn’t a pressing matter to discuss, simply taking the time to stop work for a moment of reflection – to think about what comes first – can make for a great meeting.

Influencing followers during your meetings – getting their buy in and commitment to work safely – doesn’t have to be all that hard either. By asking questions instead of giving answers, followers become engaged. Ask the right kinds of questions and you will get them thinking better about the challenges at hand.

Those sorts of questions are a tool of influence – we call them Darn Good Questions – and they’re a much more powerful tool than they’re often given credit for.

And when there’s a tough sell; asking the right sorts of questions can get them thinking from the leaders point of view. No leader wants to see a follower hurt or worse.

Picking the right moment can make all the difference. As the leader, you have discretion over when, where, and how to make that sale. Pick your moments well, choose your approach wisely, and winning folks over becomes a lot easier.

And remember that you don’t get to pick their moments. It’s the follower who decides when and where they’re ready to be influenced.

Great leadership is just as likely to happen at the water cooler as it is from the front of the room, or at the job site.

Seize your moments!
