J&#039;ai h\u00e2te de voir leur Starbucks. \u00bb<\/p><p>Je pense \u00e0 ce que Perry White, r\u00e9dacteur en chef du Daily Planet et ancien patron de Clark Kent, penserait: le fant\u00f4me du Grand C\u00e9sar!\u00a0<\/p><p>J&#039;ai r\u00e9ussi: \u00abEh bien, \u00e7a sonne bien. L&#039;Italie est un beau pays. J&#039;y vais cet apr\u00e8s-midi. Et oui, je connais bien Starbucks. De retour aux \u00c9tats-Unis, ils sont partout. Quelques minutes plus tard, mon grand latte a \u00e9t\u00e9 livr\u00e9. Dans un tr\u00e8s grand verre, la vapeur monte. Exactement comme le caf\u00e9 \u00e9tait cens\u00e9 \u00eatre servi. Au moins dans mon livre.<\/p><p>En d\u00e9posant la boisson, Mariano s&#039;excusa: \u00abNotre machine a un probl\u00e8me. La mousse est trop chaude. Si vous le souhaitez, je vous apporterai du lait froid \u00e0 ajouter \u00e0 la boisson pour la refroidir.<\/p><p>Quoi, et g\u00e2cher un tr\u00e8s bon latte? &quot;Merci, mais c&#039;est parfait tel quel.&quot;<\/p><p>Mariano a insist\u00e9: \u00abVous devez alors \u00eatre tr\u00e8s prudent, en posant vos doigts sur le verre. Personne n&#039;est bless\u00e9, pas pendant mon quart de travail.<\/p><p>Avec cela, Mariano vient de gagner une place sp\u00e9ciale dans mon Temple de la renomm\u00e9e du leadership en mati\u00e8re de s\u00e9curit\u00e9.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>En th\u00e9orie<\/strong><\/p><p>En th\u00e9orie, la gestion des performances de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 devrait \u00eatre facile. Je n&#039;ai pas encore rencontr\u00e9 de leader - et j&#039;ai rencontr\u00e9 plus de dirigeants que n&#039;importe qui que vous ayez jamais rencontr\u00e9 - qui m&#039;a dit que c&#039;\u00e9tait bien pour eux si l&#039;un de leurs partisans rentrait chez lui bless\u00e9. Je doute s\u00e9rieusement qu&#039;il y ait des gens qui travaillent pour ces dirigeants qui pensent que rentrer chez eux bless\u00e9 serait une bonne id\u00e9e non plus.<\/p><p>Cela signifie qu&#039;en mati\u00e8re de s\u00e9curit\u00e9, les leaders et les suiveurs sont parfaitement align\u00e9s. Ce qui devrait faciliter la gestion des performances de s\u00e9curit\u00e9. Aussi facile que de respirer.<\/p><p>Cela semble parfait. Cela a \u00e9t\u00e9 le cas pour un dirigeant que je connaissais il y a trois d\u00e9cennies: il \u00e9tait le nouveau PDG d&#039;une grande entreprise chimique. Je faisais partie du public emball\u00e9 dans une salle lors de sa r\u00e9union inaugurale de la mairie, o\u00f9 il a d\u00e9crit ses nouvelles id\u00e9es passionnantes sur la strat\u00e9gie commerciale, toutes con\u00e7ues pour rendre notre entreprise formidable.<\/p><p>Mais pas un mot sur la s\u00e9curit\u00e9.<\/p><p>Ce qui n&#039;a pas \u00e9chapp\u00e9 \u00e0 l&#039;attention. Cette soci\u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tait l&#039;un des fabricants de produits chimiques les plus en vue dans un secteur o\u00f9 les leaders sont connus pour prendre la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 au s\u00e9rieux.<\/p><p>Quelqu&#039;un a lev\u00e9 la main et a demand\u00e9 \u00e0 ce sujet: &quot;Aucune mention de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 dans votre pr\u00e9sentation.&quot;<\/p><p>Le nouveau PDG \u00e9tait clairement perturb\u00e9: comment oserait-on g\u00e2cher une pr\u00e9sentation parfaitement bonne sur la strat\u00e9gie d&#039;entreprise avec une question ennuyeuse sur la s\u00e9curit\u00e9? \u00abVous ne devriez pas avoir \u00e0 parler de s\u00e9curit\u00e9. Cela devrait simplement \u00eatre quelque chose que vous faites, sans y penser. Comme respirer. \u00bb<\/p><p>Donc, la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 est aussi simple que de respirer. C&#039;est une excellente th\u00e9orie. Dommage que nous ne vivions pas tous - et ne travaillions pas - dans un monde th\u00e9orique. Le monde r\u00e9el a \u00e9t\u00e9 terriblement cruel envers ceux qui ne pensaient pas \u00e0 la s\u00e9curit\u00e9.<\/p><p>Quelque chose que Mariano comprenait parfaitement.<\/p><p><strong>En pratique<\/strong><\/p><p>Dans la pratique, la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 exige du leadership. Sinon, tout le monde rentrerait bien vivant \u00e0 la maison \u00e0 la fin de chaque journ\u00e9e.<\/p><p>Quant \u00e0 savoir exactement ce que font les dirigeants pour bien diriger et g\u00e9rer la s\u00e9curit\u00e9, depuis 1968, je regarde cela de pr\u00e8s et personnellement. C&#039;est \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0 que j&#039;ai commenc\u00e9 ma carri\u00e8re industrielle, en tant qu&#039;assistant g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, \u00e0 minuit, dans une usine chimique. Pour un contrema\u00eetre nomm\u00e9 Andy Varab.\u00a0<\/p><p>Tu n&#039;oublies jamais ton premier patron.<\/p><p>M. Varab \u00e9tait charg\u00e9 de g\u00e9rer la production, les co\u00fbts, la qualit\u00e9, le calendrier pour sa partie de la cha\u00eene de production, et de garder ce jeune de dix-huit ans sur-motiv\u00e9, mais non qualifi\u00e9, pour qui la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 ne ressemblait pas \u00e0 la respiration, en s\u00e9curit\u00e9.\u00a0<\/p><p>Semble familier? Bien s\u00fbr que oui: cinquante ans plus tard, peu de choses ont chang\u00e9 \u00e0 cet \u00e9gard.\u00a0<\/p><p>Quant \u00e0 renvoyer des adeptes \u00e0 la maison vivants et en bonne sant\u00e9 \u00e0 la fin de la journ\u00e9e, M. Varab n&#039;a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 particuli\u00e8rement bien: j&#039;ai \u00e9t\u00e9 bless\u00e9 deux fois la premi\u00e8re semaine. Assez pour justifier les premiers soins.\u00a0<\/p><p>En mon nom, je tiens \u00e0 souligner que les deux \u00e9v\u00e9nements ont \u00e9t\u00e9 imm\u00e9diatement signal\u00e9s \u00e0 mon superviseur. Bien s\u00fbr, vous pourriez faire remarquer: \u00abPaul, vous n\u2019avez pas encore appris la le\u00e7on sur le signalement des blessures: vous aurez probablement des ennuis quand vous le faites.\u00bb Vous auriez raison: c&#039;est la toute premi\u00e8re grande le\u00e7on de leadership en mati\u00e8re de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 que j&#039;ai apprise. \u00c0 la dure.\u00a0<\/p><p>J&#039;ai eu de gros ennuis, mais pas avec M. Varab. Il n&#039;a pas dit grand-chose de ce que j&#039;avais mal fait. Ce n&#039;\u00e9tait rien de moins que le directeur de l&#039;usine qui m&#039;a lu le Riot Act: \u00abJ&#039;ai lu votre nom sur le rapport hebdomadaire sur les blessures. Pas une fois, mais deux! Dans votre premi\u00e8re semaine de travail ici! Si c&#039;est votre approche pour travailler en toute s\u00e9curit\u00e9 dans cette usine, vous n&#039;allez pas travailler ici longtemps.<\/p><p>Cinquante ans plus tard, j&#039;entends encore ces mots r\u00e9sonner dans mes oreilles.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Compare et nuance<\/strong><\/p><p>Pour une raison quelconque, depuis mon premier contrema\u00eetre, j&#039;ai pris l&#039;habitude de comparer et d&#039;opposer les dirigeants; ceux pour lesquels j&#039;ai travaill\u00e9; ceux avec qui j&#039;ai travaill\u00e9; les plus haut; ceux en bas de la cha\u00eene de commandement. Il \u00e9tait toujours clair pour moi qui \u00e9taient les bons et qui \u00e9taient les meilleurs.\u00a0<\/p><p>Bien s\u00fbr, mes crit\u00e8res de mesure n&#039;\u00e9taient pas toujours en phase avec ceux qui dirigent l&#039;entreprise: sinon, les meilleurs auraient toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 correctement reconnus et r\u00e9compens\u00e9s. En pratique, cela n&#039;a pas toujours fonctionn\u00e9 de cette fa\u00e7on.<\/p><p>En ce qui concerne la s\u00e9curit\u00e9, une chose que je noterai \u00e0 propos des meilleurs dirigeants en mati\u00e8re de gestion des performances en mati\u00e8re de s\u00e9curit\u00e9, c&#039;est qu&#039;ils ne se contentaient pas de \u00abparler d&#039;un bon match\u00bb. De nombreuses personnes occupant des postes de direction disent tout ce qu&#039;il faut: \u00abLa s\u00e9curit\u00e9 est une valeur fondamentale.\u00bb &quot;La s\u00e9curite est notre priorit\u00e9.&quot; \u00abNous voulons \u00eatre sans blessure.\u00bb<\/p><p>Mais ce qui compte le plus pour renvoyer les gens chez eux en toute s\u00e9curit\u00e9, c&#039;est ce que ces dirigeants font pour assurer leur s\u00e9curit\u00e9. La r\u00e9solution des probl\u00e8mes et la responsabilisation des gens sont deux des choses les plus importantes que les dirigeants peuvent faire pour veiller \u00e0 ce que personne ne soit bless\u00e9.<\/p><p>Pas sur mon quart de travail!<\/p><p>S\u00e9par\u00e9s par cinquante ans, Mariano et mon tout premier directeur d&#039;usine avaient tous deux compris cela.<\/p><p><strong>Il est temps de dire merci<\/strong><\/p><p>J&#039;adore les vacances! C&#039;est la combinaison parfaite de festivit\u00e9s et de bonne humeur, associ\u00e9e \u00e0 la fin d&#039;une ann\u00e9e. Les vacances offrent le temps et l&#039;occasion de regarder en arri\u00e8re; r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 ce qui s&#039;est pass\u00e9 - le bon et le mauvais; pour dire merci pour le bien; apprendre du mal - et du bien. J&#039;esp\u00e8re que vous faites cela. Je fais toujours.<\/p><p>Pour ce qui est de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9, il n&#039;y a rien de plus noble pour un dirigeant que de renvoyer tout le monde vivant et en bonne sant\u00e9 \u00e0 la maison \u00e0 la fin de chaque journ\u00e9e de travail de l&#039;ann\u00e9e. Comme Zig Ziglar l&#039;a not\u00e9, c&#039;est \u00abaider les gens \u00e0 obtenir ce qu&#039;ils veulent\u00bb. Au moins hors de leur vie professionnelle. Ce que nous faisons pour gagner sa vie est juste cela: gagner sa vie. Ce que nous faisons de nos vies est ce qui compte le plus.<\/p><p>Tout le monde le sait. Mais ce n&#039;est pas parce que vous r\u00e9ussissez en tant que leader \u00e0 atteindre ce noble objectif - &quot;Personne ne se blesse, pas pendant mon quart de travail&quot; - que vous recevrez un grand merci de tous ces adeptes reconnaissants \u00e0 la fin du quart de travail, ou la fin de l&#039;ann\u00e9e.<\/p><p>En pratique, cela ne fonctionne tout simplement pas de cette fa\u00e7on. Mais \u00e7a pourrait.\u00a0<\/p><p>Alors, laissez-moi vous proposer cette suggestion. En tant que suiveur, si vous avez la chance de travailler pour un leader qui g\u00e8re vraiment bien la s\u00e9curit\u00e9, dites-leur merci. Votre patron vous aide vraiment \u00e0 tirer ce que vous voulez de votre vie professionnelle. Un petit renforcement positif pour un bon comportement n&#039;est jamais une mauvaise chose.<\/p><p>Et faites attention \u00e0 ce que fait exactement ce leader: depuis 1968, c&#039;est ce que je fais. Ce n&#039;est pas difficile \u00e0 faire et je vous promets que vous apprendrez des choses utiles.<\/p><p>Et si vous \u00eates ce leader, vous aidez vraiment vos abonn\u00e9s \u00e0 tirer le meilleur parti de leur vie professionnelle.
